A Prayer for Unity

Pastor Waverly Green

John 17:11-I will no longer be in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to You. Holy Father, protect them by Your name, the name You gave Me, so that they may be one as We are one.

Jesus knew that He would soon be leaving this world, and He would be leaving the disciples behind. Therefore He asks the Father to “Keep” them and preserve their unity.

John 17:21-23 Jesus wanted His disciples to become one as the Father and the Son. He wanted them unified as a powerful witness to the reality of God’s love. The unity experienced in the Triune God is God’s desire for us.

Are we helping to unify the body of Christ, the church? We can pray for other believers, encourage others, working together in humility. When you think of yourself and your own walk, are you prioritizing unity with other believers and humility before God?

It’s not easy to remain humble, especially when you are under attack or when you did nothing wrong. However, we can find the strength to press forward and resist offense through the power that is in us, THE HOLY SPIRIT of God!

Jesus prayed for unity among believers based on the ‘unity with Him and the Father. A believer can know unity among themselves if they are living in union with God.

We must pray for an increased desire for Bible study, corporate prayer, seeking a closer walk with Him, and time in His presence daily. That is the circle that keeps things going.  When we pray and spend time in God’s word, we emulate what Jesus did, communing with His Father regularly. This relationship with God must be a part of our daily life and increase as we grow.

Unity with one another is much easier as we learn more of God. As we grow and stay low before the Master, we can find the strength to be in right relationship with one another.

In Jesus Name, Amen.
